How can I file for a New Jersey state extension?
If you are unable to file by April 15, you can request an automatic six-month extension (October 15, 2025) to file your New Jersey tax return. There are three ways to file for an extension:
1. Online: Make a New Jersey extension payment electronically by April 15, 2025.
2. By mail: Make an extension payment with Form NJ-630. Payments must be postmarked by April 15, 2025.
3. Federal extension: Apply for a federal extension by April 15, 2025. Note, you will still need to make a state extension payment using one of the methods above to avoid late-payment penalties.
If you do not owe state taxes, you do not need to file for an extension.
Please be aware that this is an extension to file, not an extension to pay. You will still owe interest on any tax not paid by the original due date of April 15, 2025. To avoid penalties, your extension payment must be at least 80% of the tax shown on the return filed.
